| HYPOCRISY: WHY YOUNG PEOPLE DON’T COME TO CHURCH? By Evangelist Ashlynn Fields - Lindsey A question that I often hear is why don’t teenagers come to church? After careful study and research, my conclusion on the matter is, HYPOCRISY!!! Young people see so much stuff going on in the churches until they stereotype all churches as the same. The definition of a hypocrite is: One who puts on a mask and feigns himself to be what he is not. Then hypocrites are ‘church folk’ who put on a mask to hide their face and appear to be something that they aren’t. Proverbs 11:9 - An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. What people say and do while in church can have a major effect on you for the remainder of the service or even in your life. Proverbs 10:12 - Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. When visitors come into the church, they don’t know what to expect. They don’t know what people are going to say or do to them. We should show love to them because that is what you would want someone to do to you. Do unto others what you want them to do unto you. Proverbs 20:10 - Divers (or different) weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD. 1 John 4:4, “Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.” Teenagers don’t come to church because they see the same stuff happening in the church that they see in the world! For example, someone emailed my mother a video one day and on the You Tube video, was an older woman in the church singing, Single Ladies by Beyonce! Why won’t some of my friends attend church? They see people playing with God. “The main reason why I don’t go to church, because people play with God like he’s some action figure toy!” One thing that my Dad always says is, “Be real or be still”. That means that if you are going to put your hands to something in church, then don’t play. But if you are, then don’t touch anything at all. John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Preached Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 5pm at Jesus Christian Center, Pineville, NC Youth Conference ©2009.
