What Defiles A Man?
The Gospel of Mark Chapter 7 records a conversation-taking place between Jesus, the Pharisees, and
Scribes about the Jewish tradition of washing hands. The Jews steadfastly believed in always washing
their hands before eating and they considered any man defiled, if he did not. The verses read, “Then
came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when
they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found
fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition
of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other
things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of
tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of
the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias
prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is
far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For
laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and
many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God,
that ye may keep your own tradition.”
Shortly after this discussion, Jesus called the people to Him and taught them extensively on the subject of
defilement. Mark 7:17-23 states Jesus’ principles that there is nothing from outside a man that entering
into him can defile him but the things, which come out of him those, are they that defile the man. For
from inside out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts which is what defiles a man.
We see the same type of situations going on in the church in this day and time. We defile ourselves when
we break God’s commandments. They were constituted in the first place to teach us reverence and fear of
God. Keeping His commandments helps us to live a holy life. The Lord exhorts us to, “be ye holy as I Am
holy”. If we can keep His commandments, we will me made holy because His Word is what sanctifies us.
To sanctify means to be set apart; contrary to popular opinion, it is not what you wear or spurning your
nose at those who appear unsaved. Being holy is simply following God’s commandments. His
commandments could not be kept under the law because there was no spirit of conviction. However, once
Jesus stepped in, a completely new life begins and you will never be the same again.
What defiles a man? Not keeping God’s statutes. On the other hand, by obeying God’s commands, it will
free His hand to work in us and through us according to His will. By not listening, we defile ourselves and
are rendered unworthy of His total power. Don’t you see God is Holy and Perfect and He cannot look upon
sin? Therefore, if He cannot look upon it, what makes us think that He can work within it? Once we get
out of the way and let Him work then we will see the Church become what she was destined to be.
In Exodus 20, Moses gave the people of Israel God’s Commandments. However, because these simple
commandments were disobeyed, the results are the world in which we live in today. He also instructed the
Israelites to teach these statutes to their children. Are we teaching Godly principles to our children? The
answer is NO!
The first commandment is to love the Lord our God and have no other God before Him. Now because our
children are not being taught this, they are led to worship false gods. What false gods you say? Well let
us see; video games, cartoons and fictional characters, rap artists, thugs in the corners, and the love of
money. The second commandment tells us not to make any graven images of anything in heaven or on
earth. Well because no one has been taught to love God and follow His laws, it is easy to fall prey to
worshipping false images. The third commandment tells us we should not take the Lord’s name in vain
but again because there is no love of God, there is no fear, and people can so easily take His name in
vain. We see how man simply blasphemes the name of God daily with no remorse. The fourth
commandment tells us to keep the Sabbath day holy. Under grace, we honor the Lord’s Day, which is
Sunday. Forty years ago, people kept that day holy because they knew that was the Lord’s Day.
Businesses closed down on that day and everyone knew to go to church. Today no one even takes out the
time to even acknowledge God. How can they if they have no knowledge, fear, love, and reverence for
God? This brings us to the fifth commandment; honor your mother and your father so that your days
may be long. Therefore, we see that it becomes an ongoing pattern. No love for God leads to worshipping
false gods, not keeping the Sabbath, not honoring your mother and your father, lying, adultery, killing,
stealing, taking his name in vain, and coveting. Bottom line is that unless we honor God and keep His
statutes, we will continue to see this world become more and more corrupt. We must understand that
Christ did not come to do away with the law but rather to give us the tools to keep it. Under our own
strength, we will never be able to, but through our faith in God, we can do all things through Christ who
strengthens us.
Read 2 Timothy 2:15
As you read, you will find Paul telling us about the importance of studying God’s Word. The next
verse says a workman that needs not to be ashamed. What does he mean by this? If we are
diligently studying, searching the scriptures, and seeking God’s face we will never be ashamed. We
need to feed our spirit just as we do our bodies. We should be so full of God’s work that we will not
believe everyone’s theories and we will not fall for everything. The next verse says, dividing the
word of truth. This means that if someone comes at you with some other gospel other than Jesus
Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection to redeem us from our sins, we will know it. This scripture
alone holds such power that we do not even see. What good is it to sit and assemble Sunday after
Sunday, and Bible study after Bible study if we are not applying God’s Words to our life.
What good is it if we choose to believe what man says as opposed to what God says? Paul tells us in
2 Corinthians 4:7, that we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power
may be of God, and not of us. The treasure he is talking about is the Holy Ghost. He is the treasure
within us. Jesus said he would bring back to our remembrance His Words. How can He bring back
God’s word if we do not first equip ourselves with the Word? 1 John 2:27 says, that we have no
need for man to teach us because His anointing which we have received from Him abides in us. I
dare not to say that we do not need overseers because God appoints us leaders, but He also wants us
to seek wisdom, knowledge, and above all understanding from Him. What He is telling us is that
just as our leaders have learned, so can we learn and someday teach for we are all anointed.
The Bible warns us of perilous times coming and we see them now. It warns us of false prophets
whom we also see now. It warns of so many things that are being fulfilled now. How can we know
to stop, trust, and be sure that God has it under control if we do not study? We should not walk
around dumbfounded or surprised as if we are apart of the general world population. We should be
declaring to them the Word of the Lord. Therefore, to all my brothers and sisters I challenge you
to a deeper walk with your Savior. Study to show yourself approved.

Know Your Enemy
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may
devour.
The Bible tells us that we have an enemy and his name
is Satan. How well do you know your enemy? Psalms
139 tells us that before we even open up our mouth the
Lord already knows what we are going to say. Well the
enemy also knows us and how to push our buttons. We
are to know our enemy as well as he knows us. The
advantage the enemy has on us is that he has been
doing this for centuries. He understands the mind of
man and how easily manipulated we are. But, he also
knows that the closer we draw to Jesus the stronger we
become. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 tells us that even though
we walk in the flesh, we war not after the flesh. Paul
tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,
but mighty to the pulling down of strongholds. The
chapter goes on to tell us that we have the power to
cast down imaginations in our mind. So anytime the
enemy comes against us in our mind we have been
given the authority to cast down any thought contrary
to God’s spirit. The Lord gave the apostle Paul such a
revelation so that we would not be ignorant. The Bible
states in Hosea 4:6 that my people are destroyed for a
lack of knowledge. There is no reason in this day and
age that God’s children should walk in ignorance. We
are without excuse. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to study to
show ourselves approved. In this day and age, we
have access to a fountain of knowledge not just
through His word but also through any Christian
bookstore, internet, or television. Of course we must be
careful what we put into our spirit; everything that
looks good isn’t. Jesus said it Himself, every one who
says Lord, Lord will not enter the kingdom of Heaven.
Many will say in that day, well Lord I prophesied in your
name and He will say depart from me, you worker of
iniquity, I know you not. The Apostle John tells us to
always test the spirits anything that God inspired
through His Holy Spirit will always give witness with
your spirit. The moment something does not feel right
in your spirit question it and ask the Lord if it is of Him.
Now we must begin to study our enemy and understand
who we are fighting against in order to be victorious.
The devil is known in so many different ways, here are
just a few
Accuser of the brethren (Revelations 12:10)
Adversary (1Peter 5:8)
Prince of Demons (Beelzebub)
A god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)
The father of Lies (John 8:44)
Prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2)
Ruler of Darkness (Ephesians 6:12)
Satan’s job is to keep us from obtaining wisdom,
knowledge, and understanding of God’s plan for our
lives. His mission is to deter us from an intimate
relationship with God. In fact he is so serious about
this that he has assigned his troops. Remember the
enemy will always try to imitate God but the key is all he
can do is imitate. The opening scripture stated that he
goes around as a roaring lion. We serve The Lion of
Judah. So he has Generals, Captains, Sergeants,
Soldiers and all types of principalities. I would say the
two top Generals of Satan are Fear and Pride.
Remember with every head demon there are smaller
imps around him. For instance Fear is the strong man
with fear comes doubt, confusion, unbelief, depression,
oppression, condemnation, despair, and
disappointment. With Pride comes boastfulness,
haughtiness, arrogance, and so many more. Deception
and lying go hand in hand and from these two stems
the spirit of Religion and Tradition (yes these are spirits
as well I’ll go into that at another time), unbelief, strife,
contention, chaos and the list goes on. Jealousy brings
forth coveting, envy, anger, destruction, and murder
(spiritual and physical). I could go on and on but the
fact of the matter is we are fighting an on-going battle.
I cannot stress this enough we must study to show
ourselves approved. We must search the scriptures in
order to understand our enemy. As soldiers we must
learn to recognize our adversary as well as he knows
us. Once we understand our enemy then we will be
able to better equip ourselves. That will be my next
article entitled know your rights we have got to
understand our rights as children of The Most High
God.
Know Your Rights
Do you know that you have rights? The moment we accepted Christ as our
Lord and Savior, we were given the right to be called a child of God. If that
weren’t enough, we’re also given privileges. We have the privilege to go
before God in prayer at any time. We have the privilege to seek wisdom,
knowledge, and above all understanding. How, do you say? Well it is simple,
Jesus said in John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you
another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever.” He also goes on to
say in John 14:26, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things
to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you.” The most important
thing to remember as a child of God is that you have the power of the Holy
Ghost abiding in you. You must know this and embrace this with all your
heart. Understanding that your adversary, the devil knows this as well and
will try all he can to keep you ignorant of your rights. Before we served God,
we just existed on this earth not understanding why we never quite fit in. The
moment you accept Christ as your God and denounce the devil, your name
goes from A book of life to The Book of Life.
I recently wrote an article about knowing your enemy now this is the follow
up to it. As a child of God, we must understand that we have the power of
the Holy Ghost. What does that mean for us? We have an instant connection
to the Father. As a child of God, you can call on the name above all names,
Jesus, and demons will flee. Don’t you see the enemy trembles at the thought
of you ever knowing who you are and whose you are. Over the years I have
learned that the more you seek God’s face, the harder the enemy attacks you.
I don’t tell you this to make you afraid. The Bible tell us the Lord has not
given us the spirit of fear but of power, peace, and sound mind. The Lord has
not left us powerless, He first gave us The Holy Ghost who is our teacher, our
comforter. He anoints us, convicts us, stirs up the gifts in us. He plays so
many roles in our lives. The more we submit unto Him, the stronger we
become. I want to share something with you, in the Old Testament, whenever
a prophet anointed someone it states that the Spirit of The Lord came upon
them. We have the privilege of having the Spirit of the Lord dwell within us.
Many a saint of old would have loved to live during our times and here we take
our rights for granted. Through our faith, we can defeat the enemy but we
must believe all the things that the Lord has promised us. God is looking for a
peculiar people who are willing to be sold out for Him. He gave us not just His
Spirit, but He left us with this wonderful manual called the Bible. His word
gives us the key to living our everyday lives with victory and how to overcome
adversities. It shows us that we are over comers by the blood of The Lamb.
It teaches us that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty to the
pulling down of strongholds. Casting down imaginations that seek to exalt
themselves above the knowledge of our God. Above all things it teaches us
that we cannot do anything by our strength or our might but by His Spirit. We
must study to show ourselves approved that is the only way to know our
rights as children of God. Don’t look at reading the Bible as a task or a duty
because you are now a Christian. But, rather look at it as an adventure, I don’
t know about you but when I open up that Bible, I get lost in it. I feel like I
am there and I see my brother, David’s hardships, I feel his pain. I
understand the frustration of the prophets because of the people being so
hard headed. I understand the excitement of the apostles when they were
walking in God’s will.
In closing if you get nothing else from this article, get this. You are more than
just a bench warmer. You may not be called to ministry at this time but you
are member of the body of Christ or maybe you are and you’ve fallen short.
Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and remember there is no condemnation.
Remember these few simple principles.
1. Never stop being in awe of your God.
2. You are a co-heir with Christ.
3. You have been given power and authority against the enemy.
4. You have instructions through the word of God to live a victorious life.
5. No weapon formed against you shall prosper.
6. You are more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus.
7. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
8. You have weapons of warfare and an armor for your soul.
9. God loves you in spite of your imperfections.
10. You are a new creation, old things have passed away and all things
are made new walk in that knowledge at all times.
11. It is an honor and a privilege to pray, so pray without ceasing.
12. Always hold on to God’s unchanging hand.
13. You have been predestined before the foundations of the earth to
serve God.
